This is a serological assay used to detect antibody to respiratory viruses. The test is of limited value due to a lack of sensitivity and specificity. It is not useful acutely as antibodies are not detectable for 7-10 days. Diagnosis ideally requires a 4-fold rise in tite between acute and convalescent samples. Single high levels in a convalescent sample are supportive of recent infection. The preferred sample is a respiratory sample for respiratory Virus PCR.
