Immunophenotyping by flow cytometry is an essential component of the diagnostic work-up of many haematological malignancies including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. This involves the use of fluorescently labelled antibodies that bind to antigens on the surface of white cells, which are then detected by the flow cytometer. The pattern of expression, along with morphology, is used to determine the cell linage and maturity, in many cases providing vital diagnostic information, from which genetic assays are performed to obtain further classification and prognostic information.

Requests for flow cytometry in the context of Haematological Malignancy should be requested via Northern England Haemato-Oncology Diagnostic Service (NEHODS): visit https://www.newcastlelaboratories.com/lab_service/nehods/ or contact NEHODS on 0191 2825028 or tnu-tr.nehods@nhs.net.
