This is a serological assay used to detect IgM antibodies to hepatitis B virus (HBV) core antigen. Tests for acute hepatitis B virus infection. Automatically tested by the laboratory in all new Hepatitis B Virus surface antigen (HBsAg) positive samples. IgM is usually detectable for around 3 months after acute infection. In patients with chronic HBV infection IgM can remain detectable or be detected intermittently.
