This is a serological assay used to detect IgG antibodies to hepatitis B virus (HBV) core antigen (anti-HBc). Tests for PAST hepatitis B virus infection. In the abscence of HBsAg, detection of anti-HBc indicates past, cleared infection. Seen in association with detectable HBsAg, anti-HBc indicates ongoing infection. Please note this assay can be affected by passively acquired antibody where blood products have been administered, or by maternally acquired antibodies in the first months of life.
