Analysis of urine galactitol is performed in the investigation of galactosaemia. Levels are increased in classical galatosaemia and in galactokinase deficiency. The test is useful in the investigation of patients who have had a recent blood transfusion as red blood cell enzyme analysis is unreliable for up to 4 months post-transfusion.
This is a quantitative assay and results are reported with age specific reference ranges.
