Fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) is generally carried out using commercial probe sets on interphase cells from short term cell cultures (e.g. bone marrow or blood) or on FFPE (formalin fixed paraffin embedded) sections or cells released from FFPE blocks or curls. FISH can identify specific gene fusion events such as the Philadelphia chromosome in CML (BCR::ABL1) . A wide range of FISH probes are available and will be performed at the discretion of a clinical scientist depending on the clinical details or can be requested by a consultant haematologist or histopathologist.
