Factor V (also known as Pro-accelerin or Labile Factor) is a non-vitamin K sensitive coagulation protein synthesised in the liver. Congenital deficiencies are rare (1 in 1 million) but acquired deficiency due to liver disease are much more common (the assay may be used to assess the severity of liver disease). Factor V is a catalyst in the formation of thrombin, it is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner and deficiencies cause a bleeding disorder. PT and APTT are prolonged with reduced Factor V levels
